It went from a dermatology-clinic term to the front of serum bottles in record time, powered by the "salmon DNA" story: an ingredient derived from salmon sperm DNA fragments, credited with skin repair and elasticity benefits.
Now the trend has a second act: vegan PDRN. Korean brands are launching plant- and microbe-derived alternatives, and the phrase is climbing search trends and community discussions. Here's the context behind the shift.
A quick refresher: what PDRN is
PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide — short fragments of DNA. In clinical settings in Korea and Italy, injectable PDRN (often marketed under names like Rejuran in clinics) has been used for skin regeneration for years. The K-beauty industry's move was to bring the ingredient into topical products: serums, ampoules, and creams at a fraction of the clinic price.

Why "vegan" PDRN, and why now

- Topical PDRN of any origin has limited independent research; most supporting studies are brand-funded.
- Vegan PDRN is newer still — marketing is ahead of published data, which is common for K-beauty ingredient waves (remember mugwort, centella, and snail mucin all went through this cycle).
That doesn't make it a scam — it makes it early. If the products are well-formulated (and Korean manufacturers are very good at elegant formulations), you're likely getting a pleasant, hydrating, barrier-supporting serum regardless of how much heavy lifting the nucleotides do.

- Check the INCI list. Look for terms like sodium DNA or polynucleotides and where they sit in the ingredient list — top five is a different product than bottom five.
- Don't ditch proven actives for it. PDRN products work best as a supporting layer, not a replacement for retinoids, vitamin C, or sunscreen.
- Sensitive-skin friendly. One reason PDRN took off in Korea is its gentleness — vegan versions are marketed the same way, which makes them a low-risk experiment.
